How to read a Rinnai water heater serial number
Type the serial number from the label and the decoder shows when your Rinnai water heater was made. Below that: every Rinnai format the decoder knows, and a real label from one of my inspections.
Accuracy is not guaranteed.
This decoder gives an estimate based on how brands have coded serial numbers in the past. Manufacturers change their formats, and a serial can be misread, so the results may be wrong. Use them as a starting point only. Confirm with the date printed on the plate or with the manufacturer.
Reading a Rinnai water heater serial number
Rinnai serials on units made since 2009 start with two letters. The first is the year (A is 2009, B is 2010, and so on, skipping I, Q, U and V) and the second is the month (A is January). LA.UA-001717 was made in January 2019. Units from 1999 to 2008 use digits instead: the year, then the month.

On Rinnai labels the first two letters are often printed with a period after them, apart from the rest of the serial. Type all of it. On the unit above, the serial sits near the bottom of a large label on the side of the case.
Rinnai serial number formats
Each format below has a made-up example split into its parts, so you can match it to your own serial.
4 letters, then 6 digits (2009 and later)
ExampleKDAB123456: Year K, Month D, Unit number AB123456.
Reads as April 2018. Used from 2009 to today.
- Plates often print the first 2 letters apart from the rest, sometimes with a period after them. Type all of it. The first letter is the year (A is 2009) and the second is the month (A is January).
All digits: 2 for the year, 2 for the month, then the unit number (1999 to 2008)
Example0611123456: Year 06, Month 11, Unit number 123456.
Reads as November 2006. Used from 1999 to 2008.
- Often printed with a period after the year and a dash after the month.
On newer Rinnai plates the serial starts with 2 letters that are sometimes printed apart from the rest. Check that you typed those too.
Where to find the serial number on a Rinnai water heater
Look for a label marked Serial, Serial No. or S/N. The model number is usually right next to it, so check which one you're reading.
- Tankless. A sticker on the side or bottom of the case. Some list the serial on a second small sticker near the model number. Do not remove the front cover to look for it.
